Najma Rashid was born in Ottawa, Ontario. She graduated from Carleton University in 1993 with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in English. She obtained her law degree in 1996 from the University of Ottawa, and later attended Queen’s University, where she graduated with a Master of Laws (LL.M.) in 1997. Najma was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1999 after articling with a labour and employment law firm in Ottawa.
Najma joined Howard Yegendorf & Associates in 1999. Her practice is devoted exclusively to personal injury litigation. Najma is well-versed in Ontario’s Insurance Act and its Regulations, including the Statutory Accident Benefits Schedule. Many of her clients have been seriously injured in motor vehicle accidents; she has represented them in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, as well as in dispute resolution proceedings before the Financial Services Commission of Ontario. Najma is also developing an expertise in disability and bad faith claims against insurance companies, and participates in the Long-Term Disability Section of the Ontario Trial Lawyers Association.
Najma has also represented injured plaintiffs in occupier’s liability, medical malpractice, product liability and historical sexual assault cases. She has a particular interest in catastrophically-injured and brain-injured plaintiffs. As a plaintiffs’ lawyer, and in order to advocate effectively on behalf of her clients, Najma has had to learn about the unique challenges that face each of her clients as a result of their disabilities. She regularly keeps herself informed of developing medical and rehabilitation issues pertaining to such conditions as chronic pain syndrome, spinal and muscular injuries, orthopedic injuries, reflex sympathetic dystrophy, mild and catastrophic brain injuries, fibromyalgia and psychological injuries such as depression and post-traumatic stress.
Najma is a member of the Ontario and Canadian Bar Associations, the Insurance Law division of the Ontario Bar Association, the County of Carleton Law Association, and the Women’s Law Association of Ontario. She is also an active member of the Ontario Trial Lawyers Association, and is on the editorial board of The Litigator, a journal published by the Ontario Trial Lawyers Association.
Najma is a dedicated plaintiff's lawyer. She knows that her clients come to her when they are at a difficult time in their lives. She not only advocates effectively on behalf of her clients, but appreciates the unique challenges that they face as a result of their disabilities.
